I am offering online career coaching during the coronavirus, or COVID-19, pandemic.
In light of recent World Health Organisation, Department of Home Affairs and Victorian State Department of Health advice, the incidence of coronavirus is rapidly increasing. “Non-essential meetings” are to be reconsidered. In light of this I am offering online services only. This is to protect myself, my clients and the families of my young clients.
Why is it important to be aware of coronavirus?
It is important to understand that whilst children and young adults are not in the high risk groups, those who have older family members, may be in danger of catching the coronavirus. A young person might not even show symptoms of the coronavirus, but their grandparent would get very ill if they caught it. The links above can help, but in brief:
- Good personal hygiene
- Keeping away from large groups
- Self-isolation and testing if you have a fever or a cough
Key tasks for secondary school students – subject choices and study pathways
As a career coach I am aware that children are having to choose subjects, and study paths. For example VCE, VET, or VCAL study need to be confirmed in coming months. This helps their school to prepare the blocking of timetables. If this is something that your child’s school is doing in term two, then it would be a good idea to be arranging some career coaching now. In this way your child can talk to me about their strengths and preferences.
If your child is in year 11 or 12, they may be concerned about how to make decisions in the event that classes and career expos are postponed. The Victorian Department of Education has announced school closures, your child now has enforced periods away from school For one thing, your son or daughter will not be able to access the career resources that are available in their career library. Please refer to my year 12 page and what needs to be done during this key year level.
I am able to offer online career coaching for all school-age students who are needing advice on subjects and higher education courses. So please don’t be concerned, as I can make sure that they do not get behind in these career planning activities.
Online Career Coaching Resources
One way of achieving effective online career coaching during the coronavirus epidemic is by organising an online career assessment, which I can then review with your child in an online session of only 60 minutes duration, this can be done over Skype, Zoom or Google Hangouts. Your child would then be equipped with a really comprehensive action plan and an amazing online resource for life. See my post on one such resource, the Morrisby Online career assessment. This is the one that I’m using as a consultant in the Victorian State schools, with year 9s.
Success as an online career coach
It is fair to say that meeting face-to-face is beneficial for first time appointments. This is because ice-breaking and rapport building can be somewhat better achieved. That said, I am experienced in reading body language and eye movement clues, even via a screen. Not only that, but children and young adults are accustomed to communicating online. I have had a lot of success in my online coaching with clients in rural and regional Victoria, NSW, South Africa, England, France and the USA. Equally, I often do use the online career coaching method for follow-up appointments, and this has taken place quite frequently over the years to good effect also. For this reason you can be confident that online career coaching during the coronavirus epidemic is effective for your child.
