There seems to be reason to worry about your child dropping out of university. The research is there to prove that it’s happening a lot.
According to Education Minister, Simon Birmingham,
“We’ve heard too many stories about students who have changed courses, dropped out because they made the wrong choices about what to study, students who didn’t realise there were other entry pathways or who started a course with next to no idea of what they were signing themselves up for.”
How can you prevent your child from dropping out of university or other higher education courses?
There are of course no guarentees. Things may just not work out, but there is much that can be done to try to eliminate doubt about courses, and to then reduce the risk of your child dropping out of university.
Here’s a check list for those of you who are worried about your child dropping out :
- Has your child received support in making subject choices in year 10? Studying what they love is a good start.
- Did your child complete a careers questionnaire in year 10? There are many on offer, including Morrisby Online and Careers Fast Track, both of which are suitable for students. The reports are useful, but only if time is given to help the student to understand the information.
- Is your year 11 or year 12 teenager struggling with indecision, or even feeling anxious and overwhelmed? If so, a qualified careers coach can help by giving your child the individual attention he or she needs over a period of time.
- Is your year 12 teenager busy with study, sports, a job and a social life? These big commitments make it really hard to find the time to look into higher education options. Dedicated coaching, just like subject tutoring is well worthwhile for someone who cannot see the wood for the trees. After all, there is SO much choice out there.
If you’re worried about your child dropping out of university of any higher education course, then it is a good idea to be organised and find support. I can help you to give your child some focus and gain clarity in terms of understanding what jobs exist, what might suit his or her preferences and aptitudes, and to go about applying to the right course.
