The University Landscape – Career Support & Learning at University
Are you heading off to university? Congratulations! This blog is for those of you who are entering higher education for the first time. You may not know what is available at university regarding career and learning support, so this blog is for you.
Did you reassess your life during COVID and decide to study your dream profession? Or have you recently finished school? University is a powerful step in your career journey. It brings opportunities to learn, not only about your chosen discipline, but also about navigating your career. Career Support Practitioners provide: online resources; advice on internships; help towards finding Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities, and volunteering. These are all part of the university experience.
Career Support Practitioners at University
Universities have small teams of Career Support Practitioners. Their work is similar to a Career Coach . Career Support Practitioners work with students individually or in groups. The large numbers of students at university can mean that career counselling sessions might be difficult to access. You will need to seek them out and book appointment times.
Online Career Information at University
Explore your university’s careers page, on their website, for online information about:
- Job opportunities
- Preparing a resume
- Building your network
- Employability skills. Employability skills can be transferred between a wide range of jobs. Communication skills, time management, and planning are examples.
Internships, Work Integrated Learning, and Volunteering
Many study programs include opportunity to work in the industry you are studying. Internships, Work Integrated Learning, and volunteering experiences are excellent ways build your technical and employability skills, and to grow your professional network.
